Puttering Around: (The) Honda Classic Preview

The Honda Classic is stuffed in a tight window this year, in between the (alleged) fifth major Players and one of the four WGC events, the WGC Dell Match Play. Interesting, by which I mean really boring, Note about the tournament: In 2002, the event’s name was changed from “Honda Classic” to “THE Honda Classic.” I’m betting that coincided with an alum of THE Ohio State University taking leadership of the Honda Classic. Without most top players, there is some fear that we won’t enjoy high quality, nail-biter golf. If this was an “Invitational” or an “Open,” I would follow suit and hit the panic button on this event. Fortunately, it is neither of these. It is a “Classic.” And under the harsh rules of the Committee That Names Stuff On The PGA Tour, it can’t be a Classic unless it will be a classic. 6 of the past 7 iterations of the Honda have come down to one stroke or a playoff. With that in mind, let’s see if we can get an equally entertaining edition in 2021:

Lee Westwood Top 5 (+400)

Lee Westwood Top Englishman (+125)

Westwood may not have the energy for a third week of high quality golf (this would be precedented, for the lazy TV writers preparing “unprecedented” graphics. It’s possible to play 3 good tournaments in a row), but since he continues to get tasty odds, I’ll roll the dice

Sungjae Im to win (+1100)

Sungjae Im to miss the cut (+320)

Employing the best strategy in the world here: using Im’s victory at this event last year to simultaneously say “Well then he can win it again” and “I suppose he’s due for a bad round at PGA National)

Adam Scott Top Australian (+135)

Adam Scott, being one of the favorites at the event, provides good value emerging out of his fellow countrymen, with my lone concern being that some of these Aussies, including Scott, may be perplexed by Daylight Savings Time

Doug Ghim Top 20 (+160)

Ghim was having the week of his life in Ponte Vedra before some stumbles to finish Day 4, but seems poised for another deep run, as long as Sunday’s triple bogey and quadruple bogey don’t send him into a tailspin

Maverick McNealy to beat Ryan Moore (+100)

Which of these two names is FIRE with an opponent with a BORING name, and which has 5 Top 25 finishes this year compared to zilch for the other?

Phil Mickelson Top Arizona State Player (+350)

Phil was finally playing solid golf last week at a big event, and with a weak band of Sun Devils, Mickelson has the opportunity to be the King of Tempe, which is totally not a made-for-TV frat bro comedy

Hole-In-One During The Event (+125)

This just seems statistically likely, not to mention the fact that you go down the 100 most detestable people in America list, right behind the dude who stockpiled every PS5 ever made, if you bet against an ace
